The Municipality of the District of Barrington will hold an Election on October 15, 2016 for Municipal Councillor, and School Board Member, as it applies in each district.

Eligibility

In order to vote in a municipal election in Nova Scotia you must meet the following requirements:

have turned 18 years of age on or before first advance polling day in the election (October 6th 2016).

be a Canadian citizen

have lived in Nova Scotia since April 6th 2016 or earlier

have lived in the municipality in which you intend to vote on since the first advance polling day (October 6th 2016)

If you meet all of these requirements, you can vote. University and college students must decide whether they consider their family home, or the place they live for school their ordinary residence, and vote in that place. Students who have not lived in Nova Scotia prior to April 6th 2016 are ineligible to vote.

FINALISTS ANNOUNCED
Finalists announced for Shelburne County Community and Business Excellence Awards
Shelburne, N.S.-

The finalists for the Shelburne County Community and Business Excellence
Awards have been chosen.

Five awards are being presented this year for Excellence in Community Development,
Hospitality, Innovation in Business, Exporter of the Year and Business of the Year. Three
finalists have been selected in each of the categories.
“We had 49 nominations in five categories that came from throughout Shelburne County,” said
Dixie Redmond, Executive Director of the Community Business Development Corporation-
Shelburne (CBDC), one of the sponsors for the awards. “We were very pleased to see the
response from the public this year,” said Redmond. “It was great to see the level of interest from
the community. All of the nominations we received were excellent candidates. It was hard to
choose only three finalists. Everyone is a winner and we thank you for your valuable
contributions to our communities”.

The finalists for the Excellence in Community Development Award in alphabetical order are:
the Black Loyalist Heritage Society, Birchtown, the Hillcrest Academy Community Playground
Society, Shelburne, and the Rosalin Nickerson Care Fund Society, Barrington Passage.

For the Hospitality Award the finalists are (in alphabetical order): Mama’s by the Sea, Clark’s
Harbour, Sandy Point Lighthouse and Community Centre Recreation Group, Sandy Point, and
Shelburne Harbour Boat Tours, Shelburne.

The three finalists for the Innovation in Business Award are Allendale Technologies Ltd.,
Lockeport, Cooke’s Aquaculture Inc., Shelburne, and Kenney & Ross Ltd., Port Saxon.
For the Exporter of the Year Award, the finalists are: I. Deveau Fisheries Ltd., North East
Point, Sea Star Seafoods Ltd., Clark’s Harbour and Ven-Rez Products, Sandy Point.

The three finalists for the Business of the Year Award are the Boxing Rock Brewing Company,
Shelburne, Lou Acker Machining & Repairs Inc., Shelburne, and Wilsons Shopping Centre Ltd.,
Barrington Passage.

The award winners will be announced at a gala banquet on Thursday, October 20 at the Royal
Canadian Legion in Clark’s Harbour starting at 6 p.m. Guest speaker for the banquet is
Shelburne County’s own Neville MacKay, co-owner of My Mother’s Bloomers Floral & Gift
Shop in Halifax. Affectionately known as “That Bloomin’ Neville”, MacKay is a highly talented
retailer and master floral designer who is well known throughout the Canadian retail industry for
his creative flare, quality workmanship and entertaining personality.

Redmond. “They are the backbone of our economy.”

Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), Municipality of the District of Barrington, Municipality

BACKGROUND

The Excellence in Community Development recognizes a community organization or social
enterprise that has made significant and notable contributions to the community, has served as a
catalyst for positive action, and exhibits the highest standards of leadership.

The Hospitality Award recognizes a business, community organization or social enterprise thathas demonstrated leadership and innovation in the hospitality industry; has gone above and beyond to offer superior service and make visitors (and locals) feel like there’s no better place to visit or live, and has made a significant contribution to the advancement of tourism and hospitality in the area.

The Innovation in Business Award recognizes a business or social enterprise that has
demonstrated innovative leadership through the use of technology, the development of new or
value added products or services; and/or improved productivity- resulting in a competitive
advantage in the marketplace.

The Exporter of the Year Award recognizes a business that has demonstrated excellence in
exporting, has experienced noticeable growth in their overall business as a direct result of
entering the global marketplace, and has made a significant contribution to development and
growth of the local economy. The winner of the Exporter of the Year Award will be recognized
at the Nova Scotia Export Achievement Awards luncheon in Halifax in the Spring of 2017 where
Nova Scotia companies, partners and industry professionals will come together to celebrate
exporting success. During that event, one of the companies will be awarded the prestigious title
of Nova Scotia Exporter of the Year.

The Business of the Year Award recognizes a business or social enterprise that has made
significant and notable contributions to the community by providing meaningful employment,
operational stability, vision, leadership and excellence in its sector.

Municipal Elections throughout the province will be held on Saturday October 15th, 2016, with advance polls being held on Saturday October 8th, and Tuesday October 11th.
