Low Income Tax Exemption

The Municipality of Barrington provides a property tax exemption for low income earners who are residents of the Municipality.

Applications for the 2024/25 taxation year must be filed at the Municipal Office not later than September 30, 2024

In order to qualify for an exemption, the Applicant’s income (Line 150 of their Notice of Assessment from Revenue Canada Agency) and total income of ALL persons residing in the household (excluding War Veterans Allowance) for 2021 must be:

  • less than $21,422.00 - grant exemption $400
  • more than $21,442.01 but less than $25,502.00 - grant exemption $300
  • more than $25,502.01 but less than $30,603.00 - grant exemption $200

Applicants must provide a copy of their 2022 Notice of Assessment from Revenue Canada as well as copies of the Notices of Assessment from Revenue Canada from all persons residing in the household. 

The property owner’s previous year’s rates and taxes must be paid in full at the time of their application. 

The exemption shall only be available for property owners where the property is their primary residence occupied by him/her.

Property Tax Rebate for Seniors

The Property Tax Rebate for Seniors helps low-income seniors with the cost of municipal residential property taxes. Rebates are 50% of what was paid on last year’s property taxes, up to a maximum of $800.

Applications are accepted until December 31.
