“A Day in the Life” – Artist: Richard H. Brannen

Richard H. Brannen is a lifelong resident of the Municipality of Barrington, residing on Cape Sable Island. Richard has been employed in the fishing industry for 37 years, but during that time studied fine arts at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and apprenticed Landscape Painting in Lunenburg County. He’s also a member of the Visual Arts of Nova Scotia. We think it’s very fitting that one of our lobster sculptures has been painted by a local lobster fisherman. Richard’s Sculpture, sponsored by Vernon d’Eon’s Fishing Supplies is titled, A Day in the Life”, and Richard told me the artwork depicted is what he sees each day out on the water lobstering.

“South Shore Dream” – Artist: Janet Moore

Janet Moore studied at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, the Emily Carr College of Art & Design in British Columbia and the Simon Fraser University Summer Institute Intensive Program in BC. She has worked as a professional visual artist for the past 35 years. The recipient of a number of awards from the Canada Council and the Yukon Government, her work is included in the Canada Council Art Bank, the Yukon Government Permanent Art Collection, the Yukon Arts Centre Collection, and the City of Whitehorse Collection. IN 2002, Moore received a Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee medal in recognition of her community service and active participation in arts education over many year. Janet now lives and continues to paint in Shelburne.

“It Takes Many Pieces” – Artists: BMHS Class of 2018 & Our House Youth Wellness Centre

Melissa Strachan from Our House Youth Wellness Centre in Shelburne, led the BMHS graduating class of 2018 students through this project. The artwork created on their lobster sculpture depicts the school colours and is created to look like a puzzle. The puzzle pieces represent the many parts that come together to create our community. The students were encouraged to leave their mark, either a symbol, image, word that represents them as individuals within their community. The inclusion of young people is important in any community, and it’s important to remind the students that will be headed off to college, or away from home, of where they come from and for them to maintain a connection to that place as well as for them to leave a legacy. Their legacy will remain on this sculpture for hopefully many years to come.

Paradise – Artist: Morgan Reashore

Morgan Reashore, from Quinn’s Falls is currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Fine Arts program at the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design in Halifax. Morgan also earned a diploma in Graphic Design Multi-Media and Development from Eastern College. Morgan has always had a love of art, and often created pieces for her family and friends.

The Logdriver’s Waltz – Artist: Jackie Giguere

Jackie Giguere. originally from Ontario, she now calls beautiful Weymouth, Nova Scotia home. Jackie is a self taught artist who has been painting most of her life.

Lobstering through Time – Artist: Clifton Sears

Clifton Sears began his art career selling his carving of lobster fishermen in the early 1970’s. Incorporating humour into historical scenes and current issues, he became well known along the South Shore. Clifton is a self taught artist, although he studies books and magazines in fields of art composition, carving and sculpture. His credits includes one man shows in the several Nova Scotia art galleries and museums, with a commissioned portrait carving on permanent display at the Shelburne Dory Shop. Clifton owns his own gallery and workshop, which is located in Barrington Passage.

“Foggies LOBball Champ" – Artist: Shannon O’Sullivan

Shannon O’Sullivan resides in the Town of Clark’s Harbour. Shannon paints mostly in an eclectic folky style. Painting buoys are her favourite medium with local scenes and a lot of humour. More recently, Shannon has been creating art using yarn, including such creations as fun mermaids in her Seabilly Collection. Shannon is also a mom to triplets.

“Where the Sea Meets the Sky” – Artist: Michelle Blades

Michelle Blades grew up in Bridgewater and graduated from Mount Allison University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. She also graduated from Mount St. Vincent with a Bachelor of Elementary Education degree. Michelle now lives with her husband Andrew and son Elijah in Jordan Falls, overlooking the flowing Jordan River. Michelle finds it easy to find peace when in the presence of earth’s brilliance, and she loves to capture the magnificence of Mother Nature. When she creates art, she’s filled with a sense of elation as the paintbrush dances across her canvas, as she experiences the movement of colour, feeling and texture.

“Blue Heritage” – Artist: Erin Smith

Erin Smith resides in Barrington Passage with her husband Sandy and two daughters. Erin has worked in several mediums over the years, from cakes to colouring books to oil paintings. She thought taking on a lobster sculpture would be a great challenge for her as an artist, and that it would be a great honour for her to depict the heritage of the community which she has called home for 21 years.

“Secrets of the Sea” – Artist: Tara Goreham

Tara Goreham resides in Wood’s Harbour with her family and teaches art in Yarmouth. Tara has always had an interest in art from a very early age. Being an art teacher has allowed her time to explore and grow as an artist. She has participated in many workshops at the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design, including portraiture, acrylic/watercolour mixology, mixed media and even jewelry making.
