Dog / Animal Control
If you believe you are dealing with a potential fierce and dangerous dog it is important to call the Municipal Office as soon as possible. After hours, please call the local RCMP Detachment at 902-637-2325. You may be asked to supply a statement if the dog attacked/threatened you or if you witnessed the incident. Your complaint will be documented, and if applicable, our By-Law Enforcement Officer will be notified, and will do the following:
If the dog is at large (running loose off the owner’s property):
- An Enforcement Officer has the right to pick up the dog and bring to the Pound, located at the SPCA in Yarmouth
- Dog will be held at the Pound for 72 hours
- Every attempt will be made to contact the owner
- Owner will have the opportunity to recover their dog but will be subject to applicable fines
- If not recovered before the 72 hours, the dog becomes the property of the Municipality of Barrington.
If the dog is no longer at large (loose) and is back on the owner’s property:
- An Enforcement Officer will contact the dog owner, and advise of their responsibility to keep dog from running at large and a copy of the By-Law will be provided.
