Businesses and community organizations committed to excellence in exporting, innovation and community leadership were recognized in Shelburne County last night. The event was hosted at the picturesque Sandy Point Lighthouse Community Centre. The evening consisted of a keynote address from Don Bureaux (President of the Nova Scotia Community College), a dinner, and a celebration and recognition of the many invaluable contributions being made to the growth of Shelburne County’s economy.

Finalists and award winners were recognized in three key areas:

The “Excellence in Community Development” award recognizes a community organization or social enterprise that has made significant and notable contributions to the community through high leadership standards, and by being as a catalyst for positive action, partnerships and engagement. The three finalists were: Black Loyalist Heritage Society, South West Nova Climate Data Project, and Shelburne Association Supporting Inclusion. The winner was Shelburne Association Supporting Inclusion.

The “Exporter of the Year” award recognizes a business that has demonstrated excellence in exporting outside of Canada. A company that has experienced noticeable growth in business operations as a result of expanded markets, exports a range of products, services or technologies, employs innovative approaches to international trade, and is a good corporate citizenship. The three finalists were: Clearwater Seafoods - Pierce Fisheries Division, Kenney & Ross Limited, and Sea Star Seafoods Limited. The winner was Clearwater Seafoods - Pierce Fisheries Division.

The “Innovation in Business” award recognizes a business that has experienced growth in the business as a result of innovative leadership, strategies or practices, has demonstrated innovation through a product or service, sales technique or technology that differentiates their business, and has achieved a competitive advantage in the marketplace. The three finalists were: Boxing Rock Brewing Company, Darren Hudson’s Wild Axe Productions, and Lore’s Strawberry Farm. The winner was Darren Hudson’s Wild Axe Productions.

The organizing committee for the 2015 Shelburne County Community and Business Excellence Awards congratulates all organizations and businesses that were nominated this year. Many nominations were received for each of the three awards, which is indicative of the magnitude of the contributions that organizations and businesses are making to the development and growth of our community.
