The Municipality is served by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.Their detachment is located at 2486 Highway 3 in Barrington.

Fire Departments

There are three fire departments found within our Municipality. These are made up of dedicated community volunteers who receive training and upgrading certification to assist them in the valuable work that they do.

Barrington & Area Ground Search & Rescue

The Barrington & Area Ground Search and Rescue organization is made up of volunteers who donate their time, energy and skill to search for people who have gone missing in wooded areas or along our coastlines. They often assist with community evacuations. Their base location is at 3329 Highway 3, Barrington Passage.

The Municipality of Barrington is serviced by 911 for Fire, Medical and Police emergencies.

The Yarmouth Regional Hospital is located at 60 Vancouver Street and provides excellent emergency and acute care. For medical emergencies, call 911; for hospital information call 902-742-3541

The Roseway Hospital is located at 1606 Lake Road, Shelburne and provides excellent emergency and acute care. For medical emergencies, call 911; for hospital information call 902-845-3011

Power outage information

Nova Scotia Power maintains a 24-hour up-to-date restoration information line where you can also report a power outage, electrical hazard or damage to NS Power equipment. You may phone 1-877-428-6004 (toll-free) or visit Nova Scotia Power - Outage Information.

Local radio, print and online media

In the case of an emergency, up to date information may be found via the following:

  • CJLS radio broadcasts at 96.3 FM for most of Shelburne County. They also have repeater transmitters at 95.5.3 FM Yarmouth County and 93.5 FM Digby County. Up to date information is also found on their website at www.cjls.com
  • The Vanguard- this weekly newspaper is published every Wednesday but is also featured on the web where it posts timely updates and information as well as news stories and other stories from its print edition daily.

Property Taxes

The Municipality of the District of Barrington sends property tax bills to all property owners twice each year. Bills are sent out in April and October. The April “interim bill” will be 50% of a calculation based on current year’s taxable assessment and the last tax rate set by Council. It will also include 50% of the previous year’s sewer service charge where applicable. Interest will begin on May 15th. The October “final bill” will be based on the current year’s assessment tax rate, area rates, sewer service charge, etc. Interest will begin on November 15th.

  • Residential - $1.10/$100 of assessment
  • Commercial - $2.61/$100 of assessment
  • Farm Acreage - $2.98/acre

  • Wood’s Harbour /Shag Harbour Fire Tax Rate - $0.172/$100 of assessment
  • Island/Barrington Passage Fire Tax Rate – $0.114/$100 of assessment
  • Barrington/Port La Tour Fire Tax Rate – $0.113/$100 of assessment
  • Former Port Clyde Fire District Tax Rate – $0.113/$100 of assessment
  • Fire Capital Rate - 0.015/$100 of assessment

Sewer Service Charges

  • Barrington/Barrington Passage Sewer Service - $375.00 per unit/year
  • Wood’s Harbour Sewer Service - $375.00 per unit/year

Other Rates

  • Tax Certificate - $30.00
  • NSF Fee - $25.00

Payment Options

Payments may be made by cash, debit, cheque, money order (payable to the Municipality of Barrington) at the Administrative Centre, located at 2447 Highway 3, Barrington or by Electronic Bill Payment Service (Online Banking).

This enables bill payment access through telephone, internet systems, automated banking machines as well as teller transactions. The proper payee name (see below) is required to perform these transactions as well as your eight digit Assessment Account Number(s). If you have more than one property you must enter each assessment number and the amount you are sending for each one. Please type in “Barrington” when searching for payee.

In order to use this service, please be prepared with your property assessment number, email address, payment amount and credit card details. Paymentus charges the taxpayer for the use of their service to cover the cost of payment handling and processing. The Municipality of the District of Barrington does not receive any part of this service fee.  The service fee charged by Paymentus Corporation for tax account payment is 1.75% of the payment amount. This amount will be billed directly to the credit card used.
