Recreation Centre Project Update

We know that many of you are wondering about the new recreation centre and are eager to start using it, so we wanted to share an update to help you understand where we are and what we have been experiencing.

As many of you are aware, this project has experienced several delays. These delays have been caused by a combination of factors, including poor communication between the design team and the contractor, concealed or previously unknown site conditions, underperforming subcontractors, and some materials being back-ordered. While challenges can arise on projects of this size, the ongoing issues on this project have gone well beyond what is reasonable and have been both frustrating and unacceptable.

Responsibility for these delays rests with the general contractor and the design team. While we, as the municipality, have been actively involved, we rely on these teams to coordinate the work, ensure timely ordering of materials, and address issues as they arise. When they have fallen short, it has impacted our ability to provide accurate timelines and meet your expectations.

Throughout this process, we have experienced a range of emotions, including frustration, disappointment, stress, and even embarrassment. We understand that delays like these can be confusing and disappointing, but we want to assure you that this project is a priority and we will continue to do everything we can to get it done.

With some electrical work and inspections still to be completed, we do not feel confident in the dates provided by the contractor to share any new timelines for an open house, public opening, or grand opening. Unfortunately, this means we will not be able to open the recreation centre on January 26 as last updated. That said, we are closer than ever to the finish line, but we want to be certain before communicating specific dates. In the meantime, we will continue to communicate directly with those who have booked space and provide another public update as soon as we have a firm idea of when the building will be ready for use.

While this process has not gone as we hoped, it is important to keep in mind what this project means for our municipality. This is a huge step forward in our ability to provide enhanced recreation services, activities, and events.
