Canada 150 – Paint the Town Red – Lobster Sculptures

Call for Artists
Submission Deadline: July 7, 2017

Lobster Sculpture SampleThe Municipality of Barrington is embarking on an exciting project as part of their Paint the Town Red, Canada 150 Celebrations which will allow us to leave a Canada 150 legacy throughout the Municipality. Part of our Paint the Town Red project will feature 10 unique fiberglass lobster structures measuring approximately 6.5 ft. tall each. Each sculpture is partly sponsored by local businesses or organizations and will be custom designed and hand painted by local artists. This public art project will play a significant role to visitors and residents for a unique and memorable experience, as we also showcase our history and heritage which will be showcased on each sculpture.

Qualifications and interest are requested from artists and/or artist teams interested in creating public art for the Municipality’s Paint the Town Red Lobster Sculptures. The Municipality is looking to commission artists for custom designed and hand painted 6.5 ft. fiberglass lobsters with preference for local artists. As an artist, this is an opportunity to both exhibit work that may not fit easily into the traditional gallery setting and to have your work seen in an exciting, interactive project.

Submissions must depict/showcase aspects of the Municipality’s rich culture, history and heritage, as it pertains to us and our Nation. Final art for the lobster sculptures will need to be approved by the sponsoring business and the Municipality of Barrington’s Review Committee.

Significant media coverage and advertising is planned to promote our Canada 150 Paint the Town Red project and the selected artists. The business along with the artists will be recognized on each lobster plaque, as well as an introduction to the community at the unveiling event.

Artist must seal the lobster so it can be transported, however the Municipality will provide the final gloss coat to the piece before installation.

Artists will be paid a stipend of $500 as well as gaining exposure for their work throughout the Municipality. Artists will be required to cover their supplies required.
