Water Shortage Assistance

(As of 9:00 a.m. September 30, 2020)

Showers

Showers are available for use at the Sandy Wickens Memorial Arena Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Residents must call 902-637-2015 Ext. 227 (Monday to Friday, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm) to schedule an appointment. They will need to provide their name, civic number and phone number.

There will be 1/2 hour time slots for showers. Residents must check in 5-10 minutes prior to their appointment.

COVID - 19 protocols such as wearing masks, physical distancing, not entering if you are not feeling well or if you have recently travelled outside the Atlantic bubble continue to be followed to try and ensure everyone’s safety. Residents need to bring everything needed for a shower and remove everything when done.

After the appointment, a staff member will clean, disinfect and sanitize the showers using a bleach spray.

Washers

Two washing machines are available for use at the Sandy Wickens Memorial Arena Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Residents must call 902-637-2015 Ext. 227 (Monday to Friday, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm) to schedule an appointment. They will need to provide their name, civic number and phone number.

As with the showers, residents will have to check in when they arrive for their appointed time, bring everything they need to do laundry and remove everything when they are done. Also, all necessary COVID - 19 protocols such as wearing masks, physical distancing, not entering if they are not feeling well or if they have recently travelled outside the Atlantic bubble continue to be followed to try and ensure everyone’s safety.

Water Fill Up Stations

Water hoses are available for filling containers at the following locations:

  • Barrington Port Latour Fire Hall
  • RV Dumping Station on Sherose Island
  • Woods Harbour Shag Harbour Fire Hall. For Woods Harbour, residents need to contact a member of the WHSH fire department to access their hose.

It is important to note this water is non-potable and people using the hoses are responsible for cleaning and sanitizing before and after use.

Water Pick-Up

Drinking water is available at the Barrington Ground Search and Rescue building (3329 highway 3 in Barrington Passage) Tuesdays and Fridays from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. 1 case of 4 x 4 litre bottles per household per week is available.

Residents have to provide their name and address when they pick up the water so we can track that information for the Province.

Water Delivery

Fire departments are making water deliveries every Wednesday night.

To request a delivery, residents must call the following numbers and leave a message anytime prior to Wednesday. They are asked to provide their name, civic number and phone number in the message.

  • Barrington Port La Tour Fire Department Area: 902-635-4019
  • Island Barrington Passage Fire Department Area: 902-637-7381 or 902-745-0228
  • Woods Harbour Shag Harbour Fire Department area: 902-723-2455

It is important to note that the fire departments will not put water in wells and, once again, this water is non-potable. Residents will be required to sign a waiver at the time the fire department fills their container.

Water Supply Upgrade Lending Program

In response to drought conditions experienced in our area in the fall of 2016, the Province amended the MGA to allow municipalities the power to lend money for new wells and cisterns.

We offer a Water Supply Upgrade Lending Program which allows residents to borrow money from the Municipality to construct a new dug or drilled well or upgrade an existing well that is required to source water. The maximum lending amount is $10,000 and it is repayable up to a maximum of 10 years at a 3% interest rate.

The by-law regulating the program can also be accessed here for more information: https://barringtonmunicipality.com/2721-by-law-no-37-water-supply-upgrade-lending-program/file.
